Intro Epic Journey '23 imageIntro Epic Journey '23 image
I do believe it is time for another adventure!

We are thrilled to embark on this extraordinary journey with you, exploring the wonders of Botswana and Zambia, as well as venturing into Zimbabwe for a grand finale. This itinerary promises to be an unforgettable experience filled with breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural encounters.

Our adventure begins in Botswana, a captivating destination that never fails to mesmerize visitors. With its diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, Botswana sets the stage for an extraordinary journey. Our first stop is the Karma Rhino Sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Botswana's natural beauty. Here, we will have the opportunity to witness magnificent wildlife and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of this remarkable place.

Continuing our journey, we will travel through Nata and Chobe, experiencing the unique attractions along the way, before reaching our main destination, Zambia.

Zambia, a hidden gem in Southern Africa, beckons us with its warm hospitality and stunning natural beauty. Our adventure begins in Livingston, home to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, a true wonder of the world. Watching the Zambezi River cascade into a deep gorge will leave us in awe of nature's grandeur.

As wildlife enthusiasts, Zambia offers us a true paradise. The country is renowned for its national parks and diverse wildlife. Our journey takes us to Kafue National Park, one of Africa's largest and oldest national parks. With its vast wilderness, encompassing different ecosystems and an abundance of wildlife, Kafue will provide us with a unique and immersive experience.
After unforgettable adventures in Kafue, we will have a two-night stop in Lusaka, a chance to replenish our supplies, reconnect with friends, and indulge in nostalgic moments at The Central Sports Club.

Our next stop is the Lower Zambezi National Park, where we will witness breathtaking sunsets and enjoy fishing on the Zambezi River. From there, we proceed to South Luangwa National Park, a true gem among Zambia's wildlife reserves. Its pristine wilderness, remarkable biodiversity, and exceptional game viewing opportunities await us. The park's reputation as a predator haven, with frequent leopard sightings, raises our expectations for thrilling wildlife encounters.

Leaving behind the raw wilderness of South Luangwa, we continue our journey to Mutinondo Wilderness, a pristine and untouched wilderness area nestled in the heart of Zambia. Here, we will immerse ourselves in breathtaking landscapes, explore lush forests, and admire ancient rock art sites, providing a tranquil escape and a chance to rejuvenate.

Heading north, we will discover the beauty of Lake Tanganyika, enjoying its pristine beaches, exploring remote islands, and being captivated by mesmerizing sunsets. Enroute, we will witness several spectacular waterfalls such as Kundalila, Lumangwe, and Mumbuluma Falls.

Our adventure will then take us to the north-eastern part of Zambia, where we will visit Bangweulu Game Reserve and Kasanka National Park. Bangweulu, with its vast floodplains and wetland habitats, is renowned for its black lechwe antelope and iconic shoebill storks. Camping amidst this natural wonder will surely deepen our connection with nature.

Returning to the bustling city of Lusaka for a night's rest, we will then cross over to Zimbabwe for the final stage of our epic journey. We will spend a couple of days aboard a houseboat on Lake Kariba, immersing ourselves in the serenity of this magnificent body of water, offering our tired drivers some well-deserved relief. From there, we will venture into Mana Pools National Park, one of the highlights of our expedition. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts an untouched beauty and an abundance of wildlife. Guided walking safaris will allow us to immerse ourselves in the unique riverine ecosystem of Mana Pools, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As we conclude our epic journey, we will have experienced the true essence of an authentic African bush adventure. The remarkable landscapes, incredible wildlife, and rich cultural encounters will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for joining us on this unforgettable expedition through Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Yours in adventures,
Mike & Ray

Botswana - Oct '22

In October 2022, we embarked on an unforgettable journey to Botswana, driven by our deep love for the African bush. Starting from Johannesburg, we crossed the border through Martins Drift and set our sights on the remarkable Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Serowe.
Nestled amidst the captivating Kalahari savannah, this sanctuary serves as a bastion of hope for the endangered rhinoceros species. The Botswana Defence Force ensures its protection, creating a secure environment for these magnificent creatures. During our two-night stay, we were treated to breathtaking sightings of vultures, zebras, elands, and an array of captivating bird species. The experience was truly worth every moment, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow adventurers. The campsite itself was delightful, offering comfortable facilities and adequate ablutions.
Initially, we had planned to spend a night at Rakops River Lodge. However, upon arrival, we encountered some unexpected challenges. The campsites proved to be either cramped or overlooking fence lines, and to our disappointment, the pool was undergoing renovations. Additionally, the restaurant was unable to provide food, drinks, or even ice. Faced with these issues, we made the swift decision to continue our journey without delay.
Our quest for exploration took us deeper into the heart of Botswana, where we were captivated by the raw beauty of Maun, the gateway to the mesmerizing Okavango Delta. To facilitate our exploration of both the town and the nearby Moremi Game Reserve, we chose to stay at the conveniently located Island Safari Lodge.
Our campsite, situated along the tranquil riverbank, offered a serene setting, complemented by well-maintained ablution facilities. The lodge staff greeted us with warm hospitality, although our anticipated tranquillity was occasionally disrupted by noise emanating from nearby local shabeens.
Eager to immerse ourselves in the natural wonders of the Okavango Delta, we embarked on a day trip to Chief's Island aboard a Mokoro, as the water levels were too low for boat rides. While the experience felt slightly commercialized for our taste, we still relished the opportunity to glide through the delta's channels and witness its unique ecosystem. To enhance our adventure, we brought along a cooler box stocked with refreshing, icy cold beers and wine.
The following day, our thirst for exploration led us to embark on a self-drive day trip to Moremi Game Reserve. The roads leading to the reserve presented us with a thrilling challenge, as deep ruts tested our skills and heightened our sense of anticipation. The entry fee of Pula 615 through the South Gate proved to be a worthwhile investment, as the roads within the reserve were in good condition. Our efforts were rewarded with remarkable sightings of graceful giraffes, majestic zebras, elegant hartebeests, and even elusive badgers.
Having experienced the demanding conditions of the roads, we decided that towing our trailer to Khwai and Third Bridge would be too arduous. Consequently, we secured a room at The Old Bridge Backpackers in the conservancy area just outside the park. This decision proved to be a stroke of brilliance, as we relished the comforts of great rooms, savoured delicious meals, and revelled in the laid-back and friendly atmosphere. Our time in the conservancy gifted us with extraordinary encounters with hippos, lions, and elephants—an experience we'll forever cherish.
Following a refuelling stop courtesy of Mr. X (whose contact information we're happy to share with you), we embarked on a memorable picnic lunch and crossed the rickety Third Bridge into the park itself. Though the picnic spot, Hippo Pools, showed signs of neglect, it still delivered an awe-inspiring encounter. Sitting just meters away from these magnificent creatures was a truly surreal and humbling experience. We invite you to browse our photo gallery to witness the magic for yourself.
Returning to Maun, we collected our trailer and settled into the enchanting Drifters campsite, overlooking the picturesque Mobotsi River. The soothing ambiance provided the perfect backdrop for relishing ice-cold beers at Drifter's Pub, all while bearing witness to breathtaking sunsets that left us in awe.
As the heavens opened and the summer rains began, we sensed it was time to bid farewell to Botswana. Departing with impeccable timing, we left behind a land that had once again exceeded our expectations. Our journey was nothing short of amazing, reaffirming Botswana's well-deserved reputation as an enchanting and awe-inspiring destination.
Plan your own adventure to Botswana and create memories that will last a lifetime. Botswana never disappoints!

On a personal side note - this Journey is not only a celebration of this being Mike's 60th year but a tribute to his strength and character after our world virtually collapsed in June 2017. Your endurance, hard work and ability to recover, not only from these catastrophic events, but health issues as well - all without complaint. - is truly remarkable. My wish for you is that this Journey is all you've dreamed about and that it is the first of many more! Love Ray
