We kicked off from Mapunga early in the morning, on our way back to Lusaka. The plan was to take a windy bypass to Eureka Camp Site, where we could rest, restock supplies, and connect with the history of our forefathers.
Just when we thought we were settling in, our Zambian friend Rosie popped up like a friendly surprise. He invited all nine of us to a classic Zambian "braai" at a friend's place. You can imagine the feast and the good times we had. Those guys surely know how to make strangers feel like family. Big shoutout to them!
After bidding farewell to our American family who were heading back to Johannesburg, we set off for the Lower Zambezi and Mvuu Lodge on the Zambezi River. We hit the road early, and let me tell you, the Conqueror Companion was doing its own dance routine on the road. Traffic was one thing, but the real challenge began after we crossed the Kafue River and hit the dirt. A promised three-hour drive turned into a four-hour adventure as our trusty old Happy Hooker wiggled and waggled like a dancing queen.
Finally arriving at Mvuu, we couldn't have asked for a better campsite right on the Zambezi riverbank. Picture this: a fantastic deck with a bar, overlooking the Zambezi and its neighbour, Mana Pools, just a stone's throw away. The place was a gem, with open-air ablutions (hot water, of course) and enough wood to keep our nightly fires roaring. The staff was all smiles, as friendly and helpful as ever.
We took a drive around the Lower Zambezi Park, and I tell you, it was like stepping into another world. Those trees, the vibrant birdlife, and the animals wandering about – pure magic.
Next on the agenda was South Luangwa, and we had our hearts set on a road from Mvuu to Bridge Camp. But, well, the locals warned us otherwise, and we had to make a detour back to Chirundu and Lusaka. Trust me, driving on Zambian roads is not for the faint-hearted. It's a bit like navigating a wild obstacle course!
As we geared up for our next leg to South Luangwa, we were armed with stories of dancing vehicles, warm hospitality, and unforgettable encounters with Zambia's natural wonders. Here's to more crazy adventures and unforgettable moments on the horizon!
Beautiful plants and flowers on the roadside called Amasende Kakhulu Giant Milkweed by locally known as Old Man's Balls!
